MALAYSIAN MEDICAL INDEMNITY (MMI) SCHEME

The medical practitioner's legal liability for damages arising out of bodily or mental injury to or death of any patient caused by negligence by way of professional services rendered.

Malaysian Medical Indemnity (MMI) Scheme is widely accepted and supported by Medical Practitioners in Malaysia since its inception in 1994, the new MMI Scheme today is structured with participation of Malaysia Insurers and offers wider coverage. In addition to the existing locum cover extension, it now features Legal Representation cost, Emergency First Aid cover and Free Run-Off cover at retirement. At very competitive premium, the MMI Scheme is a local indemnity scheme with premiums based on the Malaysian experience.

WHO ARE THE UNDERWRITERS OF MMI SCHEME?
Progressive Insurance Bhd., a Malaysian based Insurer with a total paid-up capital of RM51 million. Jointly owned by the Sabah State Government and Permodalan Bumiputra Sabah Bhd.

HOW DOES THE MMI SCHEME OPERATE?
A claims-made policy, MMI provides cover for 12 months for any claim made against you. It is retroactive upon the first year of insurance with the Scheme.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE CALLED TO PROVIDE FIRST AID IN AN EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY?
You will be indemnified for an emergency first-aid assistance to any person.
(Except for your relatives who reside with you)

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU RETIRE FROM MEDICAL PRACTICE?
Cover will still be provided at no additional premium but the Insured must be covered under the MMI Scheme for a period not less than 5 continuous years prior to retirement.

HOW DOES THE LOCUM COVER EXTENSION OPERATE?
Operating in consideration of the payment of an additional premium, indemnity is extended to include liability arising from the use of Locum whilst working for the insured doctor, provided that :

  • The Locum is a Registered Medical Practitioner with a current Malaysian Annual Practicing Certificate.
  • The Locum must have similar qualifications/expertise as the Insured doctor.
  • The Insured Doctor wishing to avail himself of Locum coverage will have to declare all places of practice which should include the timing of practice from Monday to Sunday.
HOW DOES THE AUTOMATIC REINSTATEMENT EXTENSION OPERATE?
With the purchase of this extension at a very minimal premium the aggregate limit in respect of all claims against the Insured under the policy for any one period of insurance will be doubled. The limit in respect of any one claim remain unchanged.

BENEFITS OF THE MMI SCHEME TO THE MEDICAL PROFESSION IN MALAYSIAThe scheme is a local scheme endorsed by the Malaysian Medical Association and the premiums charged are based on the Malaysian claims experience. With the increase in membership, the Medical Profession can expect to negotiate acquitable premiums and conditions from the commercial market in the future.
